Choosing the right switch and socket material – PC, ABS, or PP – is the most important decision you’ll make. It affects flame retardancy, impact strength, mold life, and your final cost per part.

As a switch and socket producer, your choice of plastic determines not only the flame retardancy, impact resistance, and UV stability of your final product, but also directly impacts your mold life, cycle time, reject rate, and piece cost.
Different materials (PC vs. ABS vs. PP) have vastly different demands on an injection molding machine’s clamping force stability, temperature control accuracy, and response speed.
Haichen Machinery makes servo energy-saving machines for switch and socket makers. We help you pick the right material and the right machine. This way you get high quality, low cost, and long mold life.
Switch and Socket Material Options – The Three Main Plastics
PC – Premium Switch and Socket Material for High-End Products
PC is the top choice for making high-end light switches and sockets.
It has V0 flame retardancy. That means it stops burning right away after a fire source is removed.
It also has very high impact resistance. It does not break easily.
Its heat deflection temperature is above 120°C.
With PC, you can pass safety tests like UL, VDE, and CCC.
But PC has a narrow processing window. It is sensitive to temperature changes.
You need a machine with good temperature control and stable shot size.
If your machine is not good enough, you will see silver streaks, bubbles, or short shots.
That will raise your reject rate and cost.

ABS – Budget-Friendly Switch and Socket Material
ABS is a common choice for making low-cost wall switches and switch covers.
Its has good rigidity. Its surface is easy to paint or plate.
ABS material costs about 20-30% less than PC.
But ABS has lower flame resistance. You often need to add flame retardants.
ABS also does not last as long outdoors.
When you mold ABS, make sure your machine can plasticize well.
Bad plasticizing can cause black spots from the flame retardant.
ABS has a more stable shrinkage rate than PC.
You can use a machine with lower clamping force for ABS.

PP – Switch and Socket Material for Internal Parts
PP is rarely used for switch panels that people see.
But PP is very good for making junction boxes and switch boxes.
Why? PP has great flexural fatigue resistance.
It will not break when you install or remove it many times.
PP also has the lowest cost and lowest density.
One kilogram of PP makes more parts than one kilogram of PC or ABS.
But PP shrinks a lot (1.5-2.0%). It can warp easily.
You need good packing pressure control and cooling time management.
Use a mold temperature controller and multi-stage injection for PP.

Switch and Socket Material – Why the Machine Matters
How the Right Machine Saves You Money with Any Switch and Socket Material
Many makers only look at material cost.
They forget that a bad machine causes high reject rates.
Example: You make PC socket frames.
If your machine’s shot weight error is over 0.5%, you get short shots or flash.
Your reject rate can go up to 5-8%.
Haichen servo machines have shot repeatability of ≤0.3%.
That means you get 5 more good parts out of every 100 shots.
If you make 1 million parts per year, you save tens of thousands of RMB in material and rework.
Stable clamping force makes your mold last longer (especially H13 molds)
Look at our customer’s mold list.
For ABS switch panels with 4CR13 steel, mold life is 300,000 cycles.
For PC double socket covers with H13 steel, target life is 1,000,000 cycles.
But many makers buy expensive H13 molds and run them on poor machines.
Poor machines have unstable clamping force and heavy impact.
That wears out the mold early. Core pins can break.
Haichen machines use a 5-point toggle clamping system.
Opening and closing is smooth. Clamping force is stable.
This protects your expensive mold and helps it reach 1 million cycles.

Servo energy saving cuts your electricity bill by 30-80%
Switch and socket factories often run 24 hours a day.
Electricity is a big cost.
Haichen servo machines save 30-80% energy compared to old fixed pump machines.
This is especially true for thin-wall switch panels.
The servo system responds fast. During packing, there is zero flow.
This saves energy and keeps the hydraulic oil cool.
Example: One 150T machine runs 20 hours a day, 300 days a year.
You can save about 30,000 to 50,000 RMB per year on electricity.
Is Your Switch and Socket Material Choice Right?
- Start from your product’s market
- Look at your rejects to find problems
Start from your product’s market
If you sell to Europe, North America, or big building projects, use V0 flame-retardant PC.
Use H13 molds and a 180T or bigger servo machine.
This helps you pass UL and VDE tests.
If you sell to rural China or Southeast Asia, use flame-retardant ABS.
Use 4CR13 molds and a 150T machine.
This gives a good balance between cost and performance.
Do not use PP for visible panels.
PP has low heat resistance and poor flame retardancy.
You may get batch returns and claims.
Look at your rejects to find problems
| Defect | Possible Cause | Haichen Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Silver streaks, bubbles | PC not dry / injection too fast | Dry better; use Haichen multi-stage injection |
| Black spots, yellow streaks | ABS additives burned / screw too hot | Use a PC screw or lower barrel temperature |
| Flash | Clamping force too low / mold not parallel | Use Haichen high-rigidity machine with auto mold set |
| Warpage | PP shrinks uneven / packing time too short | Add a mold temperature controller; longer packing |
| Flow marks | Injection too slow / melt too cold | Increase speed; Haichen responds fast |

Switch and Socket Material in Action – HAICHEN Case Study
- The mold list from one of our switch and socket customers
- Our machine recommendations and cost savings
The mold list from one of our switch and socket customers
This customer makes switches and sockets for many export markets.
We set up 5 HC150T and 3 HC180T servo machines for them.
Here is part of their mold list.
| Product | Cavities | Material | Mold Steel | Target Life | Haichen Model |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Switch Panel (Frame) | 4 | ABS | 4CR13 | 300K | HCK150T |
| Socket Base | 4 | PC | 4CR13 | 300K | HCK150T |
| Double Switch Button | 2+2 | PC | H13 | 1M | HCK180T |
| Double Socket Cover | 2 | PC | H13 | 1M | HCK180T |
| Middle Frame | 4 | PC | H13 | 1M | HCK180T |
| Junction Box | 4 | PP | 4CR13 | 300K | HCK150T |
What does this tell us?
For a simple PC base with 300K life, 4CR13 and 150T are enough.
But for a double switch button or cover – complex shape, high quality needed – you need H13 and 180T.
That keeps yield high over 1 million cycles.
PP junction boxes shrink a lot, but a 150T machine with a mold temperature controller works well.
Our machine recommendations and cost savings
| Product Type | Best Material | Best Mold | Haichen Model | Cycle Time | Yearly Elec. Savings |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard switch panel | ABS | 4-cav / 4CR13 | HCK150T servo | 12-15s | ~30K RMB |
| Mid-tier socket frame | PC | 4-cav / H13 | HCK150T servo | 15-18s | ~35K RMB |
| High-end double button | PC | 2+2-cav / H13 | HCK180T servo | 18-22s | ~45K RMB |
| Junction box | PP | 4-cav / 4CR13 | HC150T servo | 10-12s | ~30K RMB |

Now let’s calculate the benefit for one HCK180T making PC double switch buttons.
Run 22 hours per day, 330 days per year, 20 seconds per cycle.
Theoretical yearly output is about 1.3 million parts.
If reject rate drops from 5% (old machine) to 2% (Haichen), you get 39,000 more good parts per year.
Each part sells for 2 RMB at factory price.
That is an extra 78,000 RMB per year.
Plus electricity savings of about 45,000 RMB per year.
Total benefit is over 120,000 RMB per year per machine.
You will get back the extra machine cost in 6 to 12 months.

FAQ
Q1: I want to change from ABS panels to PC. Do I need a new machine?
A: Not always. If your current machine has enough clamping force and has multi-stage injection and PID temperature control, you can try.
But many old fixed pump machines do not have enough injection speed or good temperature control for PC.
Haichen servo machines work with PC, ABS, and PP without any changes.
Q2: Are H13 molds really good? What machine do I need for them?
A: Yes. Good H13 molds reach 48-52 HRC hardness and can last over 1 million cycles.
But only if your machine has clamping force fluctuation below 1% and low impact during opening and closing.
Haichen’s high-rigidity frame and linear guides protect your H13 mold.
If you use a poor machine with an H13 mold, the mold will break before you earn back its cost.
Q3: Can Haichen machines run multi-cavity molds like 8 or 16 cavities?
A: Yes. HCK150T and bigger can take larger platens and bigger molds.
We have customers running 8-cavity PC moving parts on HCK180T machines.
Send us your mold drawing. We will check the platen size and shot size for you.
Q4: Can your machines help me pass customer factory audits?
A: Yes. Haichen servo machines have CE certification.
We can also add MES data interfaces for you.
You can track production data and energy use.
Many export makers choose Haichen because our machines help them pass Western customer audits.
